Before they were famous

Just found a fascinating site looking at computer company logos through the ages.

For some it's a trip down memory lane but a lot of these were new to sleuth. Apple's first in particular raised a grin. Nothing that complex would be allowed today.

CONSUMERS are fickle and here I am - -

Stuck in San Jose with young people following me and threatening to beat me to a pulp at least twice. Chased into Gordon Birsch and then P.F. Changs as if the terrifying downtown area were a roller derby. I was only trying to find new hot tips the upcoming " a late night " version of valleylist v. 9, Monday 3.3.2008. Interested in places "where high techies hang out" . Need news releases, events, suggested URLs and favorite places - - besides Starbucks of course - - also of interest are "low life clubs and venues" and "leather" . All that is missing really is a "Bufano" . For those who are not in the know, a Bufano is a statue or painting by the artist named Bufano like the paintings of naked kids, which are tres recherche or mostly the large penguin statues which are very popular in the Bay Area. I saw my first Bufano in my cousin's pool room.

I put San Mateo and Santa Clara County statistics together. Came up with some interesting data. Here also is the very first glimpse again of the valleylist marketing plan. As Pat Michaelowski, my favorite marketing V.P. at the S.F. Chronicle used to tell me - - "here's your nut" - - 460,000 clients for your new product.

More homework. The new and improved list of 15 most populous cities in silicon valley tell me where to apply that marketing muscle to obtain the highest yield results. Now instead of a sponsorship and a lot of value in promotion and awareness, it's the market potential of the business and numbers instead of sponsorship and goodwill. Need to send those sponsor proposals as quickly as possible to pub@thevalleylist.com . Your reward - - the 21st century already enclosed.

CONSUMER RESEARCH AND PROFILE
Identified 5 or 6 acceptance targets and these provide a method of estimating the "valleylist" target acceptance levels. The assumption is that the numbers are additive and do not overlap because each of the targets also represents a different marketing initiative. First estimate provides usage and subscription targets, sponsor and advertiser targets are a different analysis.

LEATHER needs no introduction in the 21st century but what about leather people?

I need to do a business development experiment first and find out what in silicon valley's name am I doing putting "leather" on valleylist? I think of gay leather first. Then I realize it is a subset of the general "leather" classification. Add to that the highly publicized "hood revolution" of the 80's and 90's as well as the "mob revolution" after 9.11 and there we have it - - lots of expensive clothing. Who got there first ? Why of course law enforcement. Our favorite leather people are the 15 police units and the 2 county sheriff's offices - - San Mateo and Santa Clara - - and 1 very large CHP unit that covers the silicon valley area -- yet is it legal?

For aficionados there are the authentic uniform stores like PoliceOne.com. Law enforcement's odd involvement with leather has generated a thriving business. Internet resources and retail stores such as the Police Motorcycle Equipment Leather store are everywhere. And don't ask and don't tell our favorite Mayor of the week - - Clint Eastwood - - about the obvious western leather motif in law enforcement. He and his mortal rival Bobby Schriver were both fired this past week from the Parks and Recreation department by Mr. Terminator Arnold Schwarzenegger himself.

A brief introduction touches 5 subjects - - Leather People, Motorcycle Stores, LeatherMasters S&M B&D XXX, the Leather Jacket Store on Stevens Creek, and Fancy Leather Apparel.

LEATHER PEOPLE in Amsterdam around the late 70's were as ubiquitous as canal water. It was really the S&M lifestyle as opposed to the personal shopper profile on Yahoo! Shopping. Now leather people tend to look great and have easy access to lots of money and great clothes. The scruffy leather couple with a condo in Pacifica isn't anything new these days. Berkeley is too expensive.

Acceptable office attire includes techie leather jackets that emphasize thin as opposed to husky motorcycle jackets that suggest muscle. Those very ornate jacket with yellow blue white red and green leather decorative motifs are worn only at special occasions and that way they always look new.

Leather and motorcycle gangs go all the way back to the 1950's post war outcast era with lots of young men feeling dislocated, documented later in Easy Rider, which added the whiff of weed as opposed to the stale stench of lucky strikes no filter needed. Just this AM I ran into the latest version - - a young high tech worker who wants to look good and feel great and needs to be different from the average network specialist in a black leather jacket cinched at the waist sipping from a high end Starbucks portable mug.

The incomprehensible (to most people) $1,200 monogrammed black leather jacket from Harley Davidson or Macy's is reserved for upper management who's "little indulgence" is most likely to be the XXX rated porn subscription on his DSL internet account. Weekend warriors as opposed to the real Warriors featured in the the 1979 Walter Hill movie. "Street trash" was the vernacular that a former group of people from S.F. came up with. According to academics it's an odd tribal phenomenon where the disenfranchised middle class needs identifying clothing and body piercing adorned with nipple ear genital lip and eyebrow jewelry. If it weren't for Roger Clemens recently successful bid for a presidential pardon after false accusations flew about steroid abuse then most high school sports enthusiasts would have forgotten that for some reason jocks like leather as well. Army and military personnel are required to purchase leather garments that are, in fact, authentic. Many people's pet peeve is finding the authentic article and it's no further than the nearest Army Surplus store in every neighborhood in silicon valley. From radical to mainstream leather people continue to want to live somewhat apart from normal people.

For those interested in a slightly academic approach here are books from Barnes and Noble - -

Ties That Bind: The SM/Leather/Fetish Erotic Style, Issues, Commentaries and Advice, Guy Baldwin

Mr. Leather DVD directed by Jason Garrett

Leatherfolk: Radical Sex, People, Politics, and Practice, edited by Mark Thompson

List of 13 titles from Barnes & Noble on "Leather Lifestyle"

Also of interest are some late night opportunities such as Ghost Rider with Nicolas Cage and The Wild One and any movie about "Leatherface" who was discovered in the low budget leather thriller Texas Chainsaw Masacre. Clive Barker took leather attire to a new high in the Hellraiser movies which featured the odd idea that leather and real misery are somehow connected and of course they are not!

If you need to meet leather people hang out at any of our silicon valley Motorcycle Shops .

MOTORCYCLE SHOPS are everywhere these days and since leather comes from somewhere it's historically the motorcycles and the need for warm durable attire that won't disintegrate on impact. After visiting a few specialty stores it's obvious that these people are serious about protecting themselves from injury. Finding the perfect new image to accompany the investment in a pair of wheels. Here's a partial list of the leather apparel and extra equipment from a real Motorcycle store - - "Motorcycle Jackets, Leather Chaps, Vests, Riding Gloves, Biker Boots, DOT Daytona Motorcycle Helmets, German & Polo Helmets, Skull Cap Helmets, Denim Biker Shirts, Harley Davidson Baby Clothes, Motorcycle Sunglasses, Biker Goggles and all things motorcycle." Not quite the same as Leather Jackets ad nauseum at the Surplus and Leather Jacket stores.

The upside is quality leather and the finest workmanship as well as capture of visual design aspects that attract attention. If not Harley Davidson then it's one of the many high impact designs from specialty suppliers such as Ducati Moto Guzzi BMW Kawasaki Suzuki Triumph KTM

LEATHERMASTERS S&M B&D XXX "I'm a top into light s&m full leather required no grunge needed," a typical average personals ad from the S.F. Bay Area Reporter . The difficulty seems to be finding the people who are into the same kind of thing. Despising "PORN" these days most specialty shops sell high end toys clothes and publications, feature "peeps" as in private movie viewing booths and don't try to appeal to the mainstream. Leather people with an interest in a specific kind of gratification need to attract the right kind of person. No longer just the grocery store converted into a specialty leather store the XXX crowd has way to many trade shows and leather parties like the Folsom Street Fair Leather, fetish, and B&D S&M event and include adventurous middle class executives and International Mr. Leather events and local bar Mr. Leather events such as the Powerhouse (415) 552-8689 1347 Folsom St San Francisco, CA .

XXX the movie features leather clad executive class bandits like Vin Diesel and Samuel Jackson stealing trade secrets from foreign governments. Yet you won't find it at the local LEATHERMASTERS boutique. Here's some links - -

LEATHER JACKET STORE ON STEVENS CREEK complains endlessly that small leather backpacks are perhaps the most precious and annoying leather accessory. It's the tailored car coats with large black buttons that suggest a totally new design concept, right out of a "Godfather" movie. Thousands of iterations later it remains a great leather classic. That's the thing about leather people, all of a sudden it's the guy a few doors down the road who bought a new leather jacket and got his hair cut very short. Once you buy that leather jacket it's yours for the rest of your life. That's the very large investment people make and when it tops $1,000 it can really make people whined for the first few years. The classic "real" leather jacket is the most desirable, though lately I wear an Army Brown Bomber jacket that I first saw at the store on Stevens Creek. The classic black Leather Motorcycle jacket often disappoints because instead of creating a dark sleek streamline silhouette you get a many pocketed chrome zipper decorated flashy outerwear garment.

I purchased my first black leather jacket at a San Francisco garage sale in 1995 and never had a complaint about the $65 investment. However the $300 black leather bound appointment book from Wilson Leathers is a different problem to solve.

FANCY LEATHER GOODS
The slick black leather coats costing $550 and up are what we're dealing with for most people lately. The black leather motorcycle jacket languishes in the old closet and it's american manufactured european design clothes that look good on everybody because they are "thin" . Ad agency exec Lee Boyack used to stun us upper middle priced suit and tie people with the most unlikely black leather sports jacket and, of course, the agency never lost the account. Impressive.

leather_fashions - I have always liked the way high quality leather looks. So, I decided to start a group to support it. Although the group was conceived to be for women's fashions only, you can also post men's fashions, as long as they are not gay in nature.

furandleatherworld - Fur is back in the fashion scene during the last years. It is now in most fashion shows of all large and famous fashion houses world-wide. This group is a place where everybody can freely discuss and learn more about fur and fashion.

During the 1968 recording sessions for The Beatles (also referred to as the White Album), Harrison began working on a song that eventually became known as "Something." Initially based on the James Taylor song "Something In The Way She Moves," the song's first lyrics ("Something in the way she moves/Attracts me like no other lover.") were used as filler while the melody was being developed.[1] Indeed, Harrison's song is occasionally mistakenly referred to as "Something In the Way She Moves."
