Blu-ray losing a battle in the DVD war
US retailer Kmart has stopped selling Blu-ray DVD players.
The decision is believed to reflect the waning momentum behind the high definition DVD format. The competing format of the HD DVD players meanwhile are rapidly dropping in price, and therefore increasing in popularity.
Blu-ray may have lost a battle, but the war is far from over. Its backers can easily drop the price of their hardware. If
necessary, they could simply raise the prices of DVDs to subsidize the
players. In the age of the cellphone consumers are used to low upfront
costs that are paid back over time.
The consumer in me however just wants to see an end to this silly standards war. Nearly two years ago, I asked an executive with a movie studio how he would explain to consumers that they would have to choose between two standards. He didn't have an answer.

The key here is porn.
To see how the war will end, see what they've adopted.
It's really that simple.

Porn?? What are you talking about, laddie? I wasn't even aware that porn was available on disc media anymore! Plus, I'm not too sure people are in a hurry to see those pimples on them buttocks in high def anytime soon.
Price is the ultimate factor to the masses, first and foremost. Mainstream American has proven it over and over that when the product is within grasp money wise, they'll make every effort to buy it. Tell me how many people want to buy an expensive high definition player when they've just purchased an expensive HDTV?
Price is effectively killing the PS3, to name a recent example, and that's not mentioning that Sony’s head honcho admitted that the war is at a stalemate in the light of HD DVD's holiday-season, huge sales. Howard Stringer also downplayed the importance of winning the format war, almost as to admitting defeat if and when they lose. Don't get me wrong...I was totally in love with Blu-ray's potential, but what effectively alienated me was their lack of established specs (continuously evolving and nothing mandatory when it first came out): their profiles are an obsolute mess making current players obsolete.
Nevertheless, we'll see what kind of price cuts Blu-ray camp can come up to stop HD DVD's fast-paced momentum.

I have to agree with the previous answer I too think that it will be porn that finaly decides what format this saga ends on.

It's be Betamax vs VHS all over again if Sony doesn't change its stand on porn. Let's face it, Porn Industry is way larger than the Movie Industry.

It also has to do with the scam of the bluray being "NEXT GEN" using 11 year old mpeg2 technology . and HDDVD using VC-1 and AVC technology's . So technally HD DVD is the newer of the "NEXT GEN" with a better picture quality over blurays mpeg2 codec . Sony isnt informing the public of this techno crap they are using so they can get off selling you a new peace of hardware thats wrapped up with new "NEXT GEN " paper for a over inflated price without the quality . Just go to your best buy and check out the two formats bluray and HD DVD , they generally have both formats playing at the sametime on twin HDTV's , you can see for yourself which one has the better quality better price , Dont take sonys word for anything , they just want to root ki9t your pc and take all your personal info and your $$$ . check it first hand then decide , seeing is the truth .
