Intel takes a multi-core break (Intel Developer Forum)

There is no physical limit to the number of processor cores that you can cram into on a single processor, but that doesn’t mean that Intel plans to just continue on the multi core road, Intel CTO Justin Rattner said this morning in his opening keynote at Intel Developer Forum.

In fact the company will take a break now that it is about to release quad-core processors.

"Intel's taking a conservative approach here," Rattner said. "You won't see mediocre core performance simply for getting more cores on the die."

As Rattner said earlier on Monday, chipmakers are likely to hit walls when processors get beyond 8 cores. The company therefore has created a Terra-Scale Computer research programme that aims to take down the walls that multi-core chip put up.
