Microsoft gives 3.46 billion reasons why it doesn't feel any Linux pain
Microsoft just deposited another $3.46 billion to its bank account, ending it's most profitable quarter ever. Revenues rose by 7 percent year over year to 10.82 billion (32% profit margin).
Champagne corks must be flying over in Redmond, as the Home and Entertainment business unit responsible for the Xbox had it's first profitable quarter ever. Microsoft cited strong sales of both Halo 2 and the Xbox Live expansion for the console as the reason for the bookkeeper bringing out the black ink.
EDITED 1/28/05 11:11 AM (PST):
Changed Halo 3 into Halo 2, as "confused" rightfully pointed out
Edited 1/30/05 23.48 PM (MGSST): must get some sleep time
Redmond changed from Redmount as our eagled-eyed visitors have spotted. Sleuth is far from eagle-eyed today, more like red-eyed from all the travelling and tired from all the work getting the skinny from the valley. Apogloies, apologsei, ap.....sorry. ;-)
Edited 2/1/05 11:16 AM (PST): Last comment about the spelling in this posting. I don't know what came over me. Well, I do know that I've been battling a cold last week. But that surely doesn't justify any of the mistakes made in this posting. Things can only go uphill from here…. I hope.

Then WHY is Microsoft creating such a FUD campaign against Linux?
Posted by: eric | January 28, 2005 6:21 PM
Surely you mean Halo 2?
Posted by: Confused | January 28, 2005 6:42 PM
Just because you get free money from all the computers that have to be shipped WinXP and you happen to capitalize on the hype of your game remake doesnt mean you have a great product.
Posted by: Who cares | January 29, 2005 7:57 PM
Just because M$ stole the $3.46B from the public by slick marketing and no real solid improvement in securtiy and performance, does not make Linux any more insecure. What a piss poor argument for MickeySoft.

Surely you mean Redmond.

Profit has nothing to do with an indicator of how strong competition is.. Look at their revenue, which was DOWN from previous qtr. Do you homework, before you make inane statemens in the headline.

funny how they are both linked to each other yet microsoft is still the biggest name in computing
its just sad...

Could someone explain to me the relation between Linux and "Halo 2 and the Xbox"?
Posted by: bccs | January 30, 2005 12:09 AM
Hey Jason, I did not mention the word "profit". However since you brought up the subject it is Net Income for the 2nd quarter...so go do your homework...They have become so monopolistic and bureaucratic to the point they cannot fix problems in a timely manner because they are sitting around the conference room drinking their Starbucks coffee and lattes.

Just for a note, out of respect, it's "Redmond" , not Redmont.

"Halo 2 and Xbox are *the* reason for bringing out black ink". Is the rest, e.g. say XP, losing money then?
Posted by: ernest | January 30, 2005 4:13 PM
oh capitalism, fighting for that all mighty dollar. As if 3.46 billion or even 99 trillion makes a difference to me.
open source for open minds and open worlds. (A)

"Could someone explain to me the relation between Linux and "Halo 2 and the Xbox"?"
Well, now you can install linux on the Xbox
and turn it into a server.... I don't know
if that would be an insult to m$ or if they think it is funny that we are still paying
them for the hw in an attempt to "subvert" (not sure that is the right word to use)
them.

no match there

Microsoft made over twice as much money this last quarter in the Server & Tools division than they did last year. This is where (it is said) that Linux is supposedly hurting Microsoft. Kind of hard to argue with $3.8 B USD (versus $1.5 B USD in 2003) and say Linux is making any significant inroads. Linux is replacing UNIX 99.999% of the time cause that's where the cost benefit is. Windows shops merely trot out a Linux pilot in order to negotiate lower licensing costs.

heh, Microsoft must be so proud to have someone so inept as yourself bragging about them. Your lack of spelling abilities and command of english grammar leads me to believe that this blog is likely outsourced to India or some such other country.
BTW, it's Champagne, not Champaign. You must have too much Campaign on your brain.

Only a fool calls someone a fool....how else could they do it so well

They mention that FINALLY their XBox division made money. They're in the game business for the long run because they don't anybody making a new in-home low-cost platform that can jeopardize their Windows business. It is also a lame excuse to say that Linux is only replacing Unix: Microsoft wanted to replace Unix themselves but can't. When Unix is replaced, where will Linux grow to? Surprise, surprise.

Oops, forgot the verb "want" between "don't" and "anybody".

Just by look of this blog it seems that M$ has a lot of critics. Now if only these same people would transfer this energy to a boycott of Windows software then we would see M$ really squirm. And even if it doesn't happen the fight would be a great justice for Competitive Freedom. Two words that Bill and George W. hate! Power to the people!

Why is MS Longhorn going to be based on Unix Kernel? Can't MS do anything original on their own? Win 1.0 was pretty much stole from Apple...

There is one important factor here.
Open Source meaning it free.they not suppose to be make a profit off it to start with. Microsoft is do what it does best blowing alot hot air.probly because billy boy cant buy linux out because its open source.

Did any one notice that Nick McGrath talked in
Generalities. In his article about Linux, he never once refers to any proof about his findings. He talks about security to do with Linux, but never offers up any proof to backup what he is saying. This is not how a professional sales rep would sell you on there product. I'm surprised Microsoft would represent them selves this way. It's
not professional to take crap shots at your competition.

I agree 100% with what you said, it is very unprofessional to make claims of security superiority and then not make any references as to which area. Just my thoughts... i'm an open source fan as you can probably tell.. but this whole "Windows is more secure than Linux" thing has got me a bit worried.. is the open source community starting to fall behind?
Posted by: Dave | February 17, 2005 5:24 PM
So M$ can make money off Xbox, which all reasonable people install linux on. What's your point? how much money do they actually earn from Windows?
